Through partnerships with local TNR, Animal Control Offices, and Humane Societies, community education, and a dedicated adoption space, we’re working to create a long-term solution for the growing cat population.

Biscuits and Whiskers Cat Rescue is a developing nonprofit focused on cat rescue, adoption, and population management in Independence and surrounding counties. We are currently in the early development stages of building our rescue and community support network.

Why We Do What We Do

Because every stray cat deserves safety, medical care, and the chance to be loved.

Too many cats in Independence County and surrounding areas are born outside, left unspayed or unneutered, and forced to survive without consistent food, shelter, or veterinary care. Many suffer from preventable illnesses, injuries, and overpopulation simply because there are not enough dedicated cat-focused resources available.

Biscuits and Whiskers Cat Rescue exists to change that through rescue, adoption, community education, and partnership with local TNR efforts, animal control offices, and other rescues. Our goal is not just to reduce suffering today, but to create long-term, compassionate solutions that help both cats and the communities they live in.

We believe cats deserve more than cages and temporary care. We’re building a warm, home-style environment focused on health, safety, enrichment, and meaningful human connection — a place where cats can heal, people can engage with the community, and second chances can happen every single day.

Big Ideas, Real Impact

Some of you may already know me — or at least know of me. My name is Megan Hughes. I have been involved in animal rescue and shelter work since April of 2023, with a few breaks in between to pursue other parts of life along the way. I’m a wife, a mom, and the owner of a cleaning company called The Gentle Sweep. I’ve lived in Batesville for most of my life, and I can honestly say I love this town and Arkansas as a whole.

Since I was little, I’ve loved animals of all shapes and sizes. But as I got older, my love for cats grew into what some people might call an obsession. I have far too many cat plates and cat figurines for a “normal” person — but honestly, I don’t think that’s a bad thing. I think there’s something powerful about embracing the things you genuinely care about and allowing those passions to shape the life you build.

It has taken me years of trial and error to figure out what I’m truly good at and where my heart feels most fulfilled. And for me, that is rescue. I love helping any animal in need, and it’s hard for me to turn away from suffering in any form. But over time, I realized my specific strength lies in operating and running a shelter environment — creating systems, building structure, educating the community, and helping both animals and people feel safe and supported.

That realization is what led me to start Biscuits and Whiskers Cat Rescue.

For years, I have watched the stray and feral cat population in our area continue to grow while resources remain limited. Too many cats are born outside, suffer from preventable illnesses, go without medical care, or spend their lives simply trying to survive. At the same time, many people in our community want to help but don’t always know where to start or where to turn.

My goal with Biscuits and Whiskers is not just to save cats, though that is the main purpose of our brick and mortar. I want to help create long-term, compassionate solutions through rescue, adoption, education, partnerships with local TNR efforts, and a safe, welcoming environment focused on both physical and emotional wellbeing.

I want this rescue to feel different.

Not cold. Not chaotic. Not just rows of cages and fluorescent lights.

I want it to feel safe. Calm. Compassionate. A place where cats can heal and where the community can come together to support something meaningful.

This is still the beginning, and there is a long road ahead. But I’m incredibly excited for what Biscuits and Whiskers can become — not only for the cats who need help, but for the people who love them too.

I love talking about this topic and am happy to do so with any of you! Please never hesitate to reach out to me via call or text (I do love texting lol). 870-262-7130
